Two Policemen shot as Gunmen rob Eberelinks filling station in Imo

At least two police officers sustained gunshot injuries on Sunday night when they engaged gunmen suspected to be armed men in a gun duel who were on a robbery mission at the Bank road branch of the Eberelinks petroleum refilling state in Owerri, the Imo state capital.

Sources who spoke to our correspondent on the condition of anonymity, said that the suspected armed robbers had arrived the ever busy fuel station and ordered both the branch manager, pump attendants and the other staff on duty to lie down and surrender all the monies they made for the day to them .

The sources stated that the gunmen who arrived while the petroleum station was still attending to people, started shooting into the air, and with a commanding voice that all proceeds for the day's sales should be handed over to them

The scary gunshots, the sources said made motorists who were already in queues to buy the petroleum products to either abandoned their cars and fled for safety, while some other hurriedly drove off.

The police public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Andrew Enwerem said that two police officers on duty at the crime scene sustained injuries, while battling with armed men .

The police spokesperson said "there was an attempted robbery attack at Eberelinks, but the police men on duty foiled the attack. Two of our men sustained injuries, while the suspected armed robbers escaped with gunshot injuries"

DSP disclosed that the gunmen were unable to operate because the police men who were on duty at the petroleum station immediately engaged the armed men , numbering about four in a gun battle, living them to flee with bullet injuries, while their vehicles were shattered by the police bullet shots.

He said that the manhunt for the suspected armed robbers had commenced immediately
