ReplyDeleteI am Igbo and I'm married but I don't think my list was this much. The funny thing is that the people that give the most list are those who are not so well to do. They seem to believe it is their only opportunity to make money. Some charge as per level of education and career status of the lady. The higher these ratings, the higher the items in the lists. It's tradition I agree but some of it is born out of illiteracy.

DeleteThis is really not about money; it's just a way 2 make sure the man & his family understand the responsibilities, values and how precious she's to her family and community at large. it's also a way to make sure the new family will cherish & respect her as a Human being. This also cements the 2 families as one with mutual obligations & respect for eachothers' culture.
